The royal couch was claimed first
In the artwork, our hero is a small tan dog with the face of someone who has already reviewed your life and found the treat budget acceptable. He is planted on a plush green sofa, the kind of couch humans think they bought for themselves before reality intervenes. Around him are pastel clouds, sweeping lines, and a little sunrise drama, because from his perspective this is not a living room. This is a coronation.
We pictured him as a rescue Chihuahua mix named Nacho, although he would absolutely refuse to answer unless snacks were involved. Nacho is tiny, but he has a lobbyist’s confidence. He does not beg for a home. He interviews candidates. He watches your shoes, your tone of voice, the speed at which you open a cheese wrapper. Then he decides whether you may enter his administration.
That is the joke baked into this funny dog adoption t-shirt. Humans love to tell the story like we made a wise, generous decision. We went to the shelter. We looked at the dogs. We chose one. Sure, Jan. The dog clocked you from across the room, selected you as staff, and let you think it was your idea.
The mood is sentimental, but with teeth
We wanted this design to feel warm without getting syrupy. There is real sweetness in “My Dog Chose Me,” because anyone who has been picked by a dog knows the feeling. Maybe it was the paw on your knee. Maybe it was the head shoved under your hand. Maybe it was a shelter dog who ignored twelve other people, then climbed into your lap like the paperwork had already been filed.
But this is BarkShirt, which means the sweetness needed a raised eyebrow. The big comic lettering turns the statement into a victory banner. The dog’s posture turns it into a legal ruling. The couch turns it into a property dispute you already lost. The colors were chosen to make that attitude pop on the deep berry shirt. Mint, peach, lavender, and cream give it a retro poster feel, almost like an old concert flyer for a band called The Lap Dictators. It is bright enough to start conversations at the dog park, but soft enough to wear with jeans, pajama pants, or whatever outfit you put on before your dog decided the walk was happening now.
Why we made it
This one started at a Saturday adoption event outside a feed store, where one of our BarkShirt people was pretending to “just look.” A volunteer handed her a leash attached to a very small dog with enormous ears and the steady gaze of a landlord inspecting a unit. The dog walked straight past the water bowls, the squeaky toys, and three perfectly nice families. Then he sat on her sneaker and refused to move.
The volunteer laughed and said, “Well, he picked you.” That line followed us around all week. We heard versions of it from customers too. A lab who chose his person by falling asleep on her foot. A senior beagle who barked once at a man, then curled up in his coat. A suspicious little terrier who rejected everyone until one woman sneezed, at which point he apparently decided she needed supervision.
So we made the My Dog Chose Me dog shirt for every servant who knows the truth. Love at first sight is cute. Love at first claim is a dog story.
For the chosen ones
Wear it if your dog picked you, trained you, redecorated your couch with fur, and somehow made your life better while acting like you should thank them for the opportunity. Nacho would approve, after a brief inspection and one small tax in chicken.
