The star of Plans Are A Trap is Milton, a long, elegant, emotionally overbooked sighthound with the face of someone who just remembered a dinner reservation from three Thursdays ago. He is halfway hidden behind a vintage armchair, all skinny legs and tragic eyes, trying to merge with the upholstery before anyone can ask if he is still coming.
Around him, the room has become a crime scene of obligation. Envelopes are scattered across the wood floor. One says invitation, which is already suspicious. A rotary phone glows like it is cursed, practically vibrating with incoming expectations. The big comic-book lettering explodes across the wall in red, cream, and yellow, shouting PLANS ARE A TRAP with the kind of drama usually reserved for meteor strikes and group texts that start with “quick question.”
Milton is not lazy. Milton is not antisocial. Milton simply understands something the rest of us keep pretending not to know, that agreeing to future activities is an act of reckless optimism. Why We Made It
This design started, as many BarkShirt ideas do, with a dog behaving more honestly than any human in the room. A friend of the shop had a rescue greyhound mix who would disappear every time the family calendar came out. Not the vacuum. Not thunder. The calendar. If someone said “Saturday,” she would quietly relocate behind a chair and stare at the wall like she had just received legal papers.
That image stuck with us. We began joking about a dog who could smell obligation in the air, who knew the difference between “want to go for a ride?” and “we have a thing at seven.” From there came the invitations, the phone, the half-hidden escape posture, and finally the statement. It had to be blunt. Not “I prefer staying in.” Not “maybe next time.” Milton would never waste syllables when the truth was available. Plans. Are. A. Trap.
We made this funny dog shirt about avoiding plans for the people who love their dogs partly because dogs do not ask them to network, mingle, circle back, or meet for drinks “sometime soon.” Dogs understand the beauty of the immediate. Snack now. Nap now. Panic at the doorbell now.
