The Scene on the Shirt
The artwork drops you into a nursery that has clearly been taken over by the dog. At the bottom, a stack of chunky alphabet blocks sits like evidence at a very cute crime scene. Beside them is a golden, floppy-eared pup with a face full of wisdom, impatience, and the smug calm of someone who knows they were the favorite before the child could form consonants.
Behind our dog, the words “FIRST WORD WAS DOG” roll across the shirt in big, wavy, retro lettering. The colors are warm orange, deep purple, and pinkish swirls, like a 1970s children’s book got into the good markers and decided to become a concert poster. It feels playful, a little psychedelic, and very proud of itself. Which is exactly the point.

In Benny’s world, the baby did not simply say “dog” first. The baby made a values statement. The baby reviewed the household staff and correctly identified the most important department, Snacks, Security, Emotional Support, Floor Cleanup, and Sock Redistribution. Benny is not shocked. Benny has been putting in the work.
The joke lands because every dog person knows this family dynamic. The adults buy the toys, assemble the crib, research the car seat, and whisper about sleep schedules. Then the dog walks into the room, sneezes once, and becomes the baby’s entire personality. Suddenly every picture is baby plus dog. Every laugh is because the dog blinked. Every developmental milestone is being quietly supervised by a four-legged project manager.
Why We Made It
The spark for this design came from a real conversation at BarkShirt HQ after a team member admitted that her niece’s first recognizable word was not “mom,” “dad,” or even “no.” It was “dog,” said while reaching for a patient old retriever named June who had been lying beside the play mat like a furry bodyguard.
That kicked off a very loud round of stories. Someone’s toddler called every animal “dog” for six months, including cows. Someone else had a nephew who learned the dog’s name before learning his own uncle’s. The winning story involved a baby who would only crawl if the family beagle walked backward in front of him like a tiny motivational coach.
We knew the shirt could not be too sweet. Sweet is easy. BarkShirt is daily drops for the dog-loving servant, which means the dog needs the last word whenever possible. So we leaned into the brag. The blocks gave it that early-childhood milestone feeling, while the swirling type made it feel louder, funnier, and less like something from a baby shower card.
