Some designs bark. This one quietly rests its chin on the keyboard, blinks twice, and lets the panic type itself. Everything Is Due Yesterday is our salute to the calendar-invaded, inbox-haunted, meeting-stacked humans who are technically still employed, spiritually under a desk, and emotionally sharing a brain cell with a very tired dog.
The scene: one dog, no bandwidth
At the center of the artwork is a big, soft, tri-color office martyr we’ve named Bernard “Bernie” Stapleton. Bernie is the unofficial department mascot of Doing Too Much. He is not the boss. He is not the intern. He is the employee who somehow got copied on everything, owns three versions of the same spreadsheet, and has been asked to “circle back” so many times that he now walks in spirals.
In the design, Bernie has given up the performance of productivity. His front paws are sprawled across a beige keyboard, his chin is parked right on the keys, and his eyes have that heroic, glassy look of someone who has just learned there is a pre-meeting before the planning meeting. Around him is a landslide of paperwork, crumpled notes, half-read documents, and very official-looking books. One is labeled Team Book. Another says Meeting Yearbooks, because apparently the meetings have started commemorating themselves.
Above the whole mess flies a vintage pennant banner shouting, Everything Is Due Yesterday. It has the cheerful school-spirit shape of a rally flag, but the message is pure workplace dread. That contrast is the joke. It looks like a pep rally for people who have already missed the bus, the deadline, and possibly lunch.
Meet Bernie, patron saint of the overassigned
Bernie is the dog who would absolutely help if he could, but unfortunately he has been assigned seven “quick things” before breakfast. He is loyal, patient, and deeply suspicious of calendar invites with no agenda. His fur is fluffy, his face is sweet, and his soul is currently trapped in a shared document called FINAL_final_revised_USETHISONE_v8.
We wanted this piece to feel funny before you even read it. The droopy expression, the defeated body language, the mountain of paper, all of it says, “I am present, but I am not available.” Then the statement lands and turns the whole image into a tiny workplace anthem. This is a funny dog shirt for deadline survivors, but it is also for students, teachers, freelancers, project managers, parents, volunteers, and anyone who has ever opened an email and whispered, “Absolutely not.”
The colors lean into that old academic-office mood, maroon, mustard, cream, ink-black, with a navy shirt background that makes the banner and paperwork pop. We liked the idea that Bernie might be buried in forms from a forgotten university where the only major is Applied Panic.
Why we made it
This one started after a very real BarkShirt production week where three unrelated deadlines collapsed into the same 48-hour period. A printer proof needed approval. A product page needed copy. Someone asked if we could “just quickly” rename a file folder that had, naturally, become the load-bearing wall of the whole operation. In the middle of it, one of our dogs flopped beside a laptop with the exact expression Bernie has now. Not sleeping. Not helping. Simply witnessing.
That was the spark. We wrote “Everything is due yesterday” on a sticky note and stuck it to the edge of a monitor. By the end of the day, everyone who passed it laughed in a slightly unsafe way. The phrase had teeth, but tired teeth. It was snarky without being cruel. It mocked the modern speed of work, not the person drowning in it.
From there, we built Bernie’s little disaster zone. The keyboard had to be old-school enough to feel clacky and unforgiving. The papers had to look endless. The books had to imply committees, trainings, processes, and other majestic wastes of daylight. We kept coming back to the banner because it made the whole thing feel like an achievement badge for surviving unreasonable expectations.
