The retro color palette was part of the character from the start. We wanted Waffles to feel like he belonged on an old school spirit banner rescued from a basement, then accidentally blessed with too much caffeine. The navy shirt gives the whole badge a deep stage curtain effect, so the reds and yellows pop like a pep rally happening inside your nervous system.
Why we made it
The idea started during a very real BarkShirt packing day in May, when half our team had students in their lives. One nephew was taking AP exams, one roommate was finishing nursing school, and one of our customer service dogs, a terrier mix with no respect for human deadlines, kept stealing highlighters from a tote bag. Every conversation sounded calm for about four minutes, then someone would say, “It’s fine,” in a tone that meant it was profoundly not fine.
We joked that finals week needed a mascot who was not wise, not serene, and not pretending to have a color-coded planner. It needed a dog who understood the sacred academic cycle of confidence, panic, snack, panic, overexplaining, and lying on the floor. From there, the trophy came quickly. Finals always dangle achievement in front of you, but somehow it is also in the way. That tiny catastrophe became the whole composition.
